Framed by the shimmering waters of Lake Constance and the lush alpine valleys of Austria and Switzerland, this off-the-beaten-track tour takes in lesser-known, truly fantastic regional treasures! Based in Feldkirch – where one side of your hotel gazes toward Austria and the other toward Switzerland – this getaway combines panoramic mountain railways, historic castles, chocolate and cheese tastings, and scenic lake crossings, all paired with included evening drinks during dinner at our host hotel.
Snapshot Itinerary:
- Day 1 – Channel Crossing to France: Board our short Channel ferry crossing to France and travel to our overnight half-board hotel in the Metz area.
- Day 2 – Black Forest, Switzerland & Onwards to Feldkirch: Journey south through the Black Forest and northern Switzerland before arriving in Austria. Check in to the 4★ Hotel Weisses Kreuz for a warm welcome drink and our first dinner with drinks included.
- Day 3 – Historic Feldkirch & Schattenburg Castle: Guided tour of Feldkirch’s medieval winding lanes and Schattenburg Castle Museum, followed by a free afternoon.
- Day 4 – Steam Trains, Cheese & The Bödele Pass: Visit a traditional cheesemaker in the Bregenzerwald to sample mountain cheeses, then ride the narrow-gauge Wälderbähnle Railway from Bezau to Schwarzenberg, returning via the breathtaking Bödele Pass.
- Day 5 – Lake Constance, Swiss Rails, Appenzell & Chocolate Treats: Take the cog-wheel Rheineck Railway up the slopes for panoramic views, visit Appenzell, ride the Appenzeller Railway to Altstätten, and enjoy a chocolate tasting at Fenkart Schlosskaffee in Hohenems.
- Day 6 – Old Constance, Lake Ferry, Salem Castle & Wine Tasting: Explore historic Constance in Germany, board the car-ferry across Lake Constance to medieval Meersburg, visit grand Salem Castle, and enjoy a local wine tasting in Hagnau.
- Day 7 – Bid Farewell to Austria: Receive a parting gift from our hotel hosts before heading north through France to our final overnight half-board stay in the Metz area.
- Day 8 – Homeward Journey: Travel to Calais for our return Channel crossing back home.
